Orchids of May 2016

Happy May Day! Here in New England it's raining and getting very green. I love the promise of perennials in May. Anything is possible! The orchid bloom is slowing down and new growths appearing. I hope those in the Southern Hemisphere will post lots of photos to sustain us in the north!

Here is my last cymbidium to open at the end of the season. What is blooming at your place???

We came from http://www.crazyorchidlady.com/content/orchids-april-2016

Thanks for the clear tarp link...appreciate that!

I visited 'Mr. Shomburkia' today at his greenhouse in Sarasota, Fl...what a place! The greenhouse is about as big as a football field and filled to the rafters with the plants he has been breeding for 25 years. I took only a few photos as my phone felt like the battery was going to catch on fire while in my pocket!

and a few plants came home with me...ok, ok.OK! 6 came home with me..

Jfk. Joseph's Dream Coat

I'll have to recheck the tag on this one...my notes just say Epi. Orange

(Enc. Alata x Gur. aurantaca).

Two others are giant divisions with one or two spikes and the last 2 are

just finished blooming established plants.

Nice work love the color and it looks small enought I might even have the room. Was the plant growing in that pot or did you just put it in there. I like the terra cotta pots but it seem every time I go to repot all the root are stuck to the sides and you have to ripe then to get it out.

Great color on the Otaara. Isn't it weird how some plants languish and finally bloom? I always give a half dead plant a six month chance at least! Maybe I should repot more often!

Lindsey that is such a nice Slc! Many of my slcs live in the cool room and the flowers drape out of the pot. I love how upright World Vacation is!

Bill, yum yum yum on Little Imp. Can't wait for all those spikes to bloom!

thanks guys!

Jim, this is a 4 inch pot. It came in a plastic pot and I guess it would be called a 'compact' plant. I have always grown in clay pots and now that my plants are outside year round it's pretty much a necessity.. Besides helping to dry the roots and media.. The transpiration/evaporation help keep the plant cooler. im pretty good about repotting every two years..sometimes I can save the pot by soaking it for a few hours and teasing the roots off the sides.. If I do have to demolish the pot , I clean the shards and use them in the bottom of the next pot.

kathy, I've gotten much better at staking all the new growth and it is helping the flowers present themselves better.

I've been checking out everyone's blooms but haven't posted in a while, this always turns out to be a busy time of year for me.  We have made two out of town trips in the past few weeks, and tomorrow my baby granddaughter is coming for a week.  Here is one cutie that is blooming, I bought in bud at a show in March:

This weekend our local orchid club has a VIP guest speaker coming, Thomas Mirenda from the Smithsonian!  Kathy, did you get the message I sent you?

My Dendrobium sends its regards to yours...maybe they were neighbors back at J & L!

I sent another message, I'll try some other way if you don't get it, Facebook maybe?

Got your message. I'm pretty sure our dendrobiums were neighbors on the J&L table!

I will check Lynleigh Koopowitz and see what medium she's growing in.

Bill, that's a beautiful Cym...love the delicate pastel colors...

Liz, maybe your Den and Kathy's are sisters from the same mother?

I went to a GIANT orchid show yesterday..something like 80 orchid vendors there in a lovely park like setting. I bought a few plants...only a couple in bloom and a few in bud the rest are near blooming size and I got a few seedlings to fill up my traveling crate.

this is a very cute window sill size plant and I just fell in love with the

colors and freckles ( of course) but the flower form spoke to me as well.

Love the cym! And love your new orchids, Lindsey, especially the Carolina Orange Glow hybrid. Glow is right!

Spent the afternoon with Tom Mirenda, Roger West, our very own Liz, and Steve Steiner. We had a wonderful time. Can't wait to hear what Tom teaches us tomorrow at our meeting. He takes care of 8,000 orchids in the Smithsonian Collection in Washington, DC!

Wow..what an awesome opportunity to learn from Tom...I am green with envy..take lots of notes!

This morning while I was packing up to leave Miami, Fl...I noticed that Lc. Gold Digger 'Fuchs Mandarin' had opened her buds over night

later that day we needed to go to Home Depot ( the big box home improvement store)

and I was shocked to find this adorable Tolumnia cross for under $6.00
